The Yellow Line of the Namma Metro is nearing completion and is poised to be a transformative addition to Bangalore’s metro rail network. Spanning 18.82 kilometers with 16 stations, it will link R.V. Road with Bommasandra, improving connectivity to key industrial hubs like Electronic City and Bommasandra.

Key Features of the Yellow Line

One of the most notable features of the Yellow Line is its interchange stations, designed to integrate Bangalore’s expanding metro network. At R.V. Road, passengers can interchange with the Green Line. The Jayadeva Hospital station will connect with the Pink Line and become Bangalore’s tallest and largest metro station, while the Central Silk Board station will link with the upcoming Blue Line. The line will serve as a lifeline for commuters in Bommasandra and Electronic City, reducing travel time for thousands of employees.

Expected Opening and Delays

Initially scheduled to open in June 2023, the Yellow Line’s launch has been pushed to November 2024 due to delays in the delivery of metro coaches from China. Despite these setbacks, BMRCL remains optimistic, with safety inspections by the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety expected by October 2024. Once cleared, the line will be ready for public use.

The Need for the Yellow Line: Addressing Bangalore's Traffic Woes

Bangalore’s traffic congestion, especially along the Outer Ring Road, has long been a problem for commuters. Plans for the Yellow Line were initiated in 2009 under Phase 2 of Namma Metro, aimed at connecting the city’s southern industrial hubs with urban centers. The Yellow Line will provide a direct, efficient transit route that reduces congestion, lowers pollution, and enhances the quality of life in the city.

Funding and Collaboration

Phase 2 of Namma Metro, including the Yellow Line, is funded jointly by the Central and State Governments, contributing ₹15,000 crore. The Central Government covers 20% and the State Government 30%, while the rest is raised through loans. Corporates like Biocon and Infosys have also pledged ₹100 crore each for nearby stations, marking a strong public-private collaboration.

Construction Milestones and Challenges

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone in June 2016. Civil works began in 2017, with ITD Cementation India handling major contracts. Land acquisition in densely populated areas slowed progress, while delays in rolling stock procurement further pushed timelines. Despite challenges, most civil works are nearing completion.

Looking Ahead: The Future of the Yellow Line

Once operational, the Yellow Line will transform commuting in Bangalore. By integrating with the Green, Pink, and Blue Lines, it will offer seamless connectivity across the city. It will also promote public transport, cut down traffic congestion, reduce emissions, and support the city’s sustainable urban growth. The Yellow Line is a milestone in Bangalore’s journey toward a modern, connected metropolis.
